Guest Post—Standing Strong and Speak Up: Advocating for the Nonprofit Sector

Nonprofit organizations throughout the country are feeling the squeeze due to recent and proposed federal budget cuts.

In many ways, these organizations are the backbone of our communities, delivering vital services at little-to-no cost, yet they now face tough questions about how to build a sustainable future. As funding streams dry up, nonprofits must find new ways to stand strong and speak up.

Here are a few strategies to help nonprofits advocate for themselves in these challenging times.

One way that nonprofits can respond to federal budget cuts is through advocacy. Nonprofit organizations are often hesitant to take a stance that may be seen as political due to legal concerns, but there are ways for nonprofits to amplify their voices and influence policy effectively and legally.

Educate, Without Lobbying: Nonprofits can provide fact-based information about the impact of budget cuts on their organizations through op-eds, newsletters, social media, and public events. This is not lobbying–it’s essential civic engagement.

Know Your Limits: Organizations can legally engage in limited lobbying. Consider making a 501(h) election, otherwise known as filing IRS form 5768, to define your organization’s lobbying limits based on expense and to protect your nonprofit status while still having a voice.

Craft Smart Messages: When you’re speaking publicly, you’re reaching a wide array of people with lots of different opinions. Advocacy messages should emphasize shared values, local impact, and fiscal responsibility. Engaging bipartisan voices by having influential board members write personal op-eds to help bridge divides.

Mobilize Locally and Federally: Use action alerts to drive community calls and emails to educate elected officials about the impact of your nonprofit. Share advocacy toolkits with community members, and encourage people to sign up for your newsletter and share your story on social media.

Join National Efforts: Coalitions like the National Humanities Alliance and the Human Service Chamber provide templates, scripts, and tools to amplify your message. Use them!

Consider Legal Action: Some nonprofits are joining lawsuits to push back against unlawful or unjust funding cuts–a bold but increasingly relevant option, as suggested by the Alliance for Justice.

Nonprofits have long been the glue that holds communities together. It’s time to raise our collective voices, defend the resources our communities rely on, and remind lawmakers that investment in the public good is not optional–it’s essential.
